Mining hazards front and centre at industry meeting

10 April 2024

The brilliant minds that keep miners safe across Queensland have met in Brisbane to address key issues facing the industry.

Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) held the meeting at its research and testing facility, called Simtars, in Brisbane this morning.

Sixty occupational hygiene and health consultants, as well as safety and health workers who service the mining industry went along to share ideas and brainstorm new ways to tackle the biggest hazards.

On the agenda was respiratory protection, psychosocial hazards, welding fume trends, and the risks of hydrogen and electrical vehicles, to name a few.

RSHQ's Principal Occupational Hygienist Samantha Forster said the goal is to improve communication and information sharing between mine sites on key health and safety issues.

"Queensland is such a huge state and with our occupational hygienists working so far apart, it's important we have this opportunity to come together and share learnings," said Mrs Forster.

"At the end of the day, the goal is to always improve the safety and health of our resources workers."

Today was the second time RSHQ has held this kind of meeting for those working in resources health and safety; the first was in 2022.
